What I Learned in Journalism Class

In Response To:

"Two Parts:
  1. Tell me one thing you learned this semester which you feel will benefit you moving forward as a journalist and how/why.
  2. Tell me one thing you would like to see changed. I have limited ability to change most things about the class but will certainly bring your suggestions to our next meeting."

1.     I think one of the best things I learned this semester in J2150 was how to further edit my photos and videos. I have previous knowledge of editing with Final Cut Pro X, however the lessons on Lynda helped me to expand my knowledge. One example was the color correction features in the video editing software. I had known some correcting techniques to colorize my images, however, the Lynda exercises showed me how to correct one specific color and one specific area in the frame. I had never known you could specify what color or area you wanted to fix, so I generally would just fix my image as a whole, hoping the colors would turn out how I wanted them too. Now I can pinpoint specific aspects of each frame and specific colors and use the techniques I learned with the online lessons. I also got a better understanding of the ISO feature on my camera from taking this course. I knew my camera had the ISO feature, and that I should correct it based on what scene I was shooting in, but I never really understood what effect ISO had on my photos.

1    2.   One thing I would want to see changed in this course is a more detailed, and further demonstration of each of the tools we used. The digital camera, the video camera, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Photoshop, etc. The way to use these tools correctly was gone over very briefly. I felt as though some students may have struggled with understanding how to use the technology because they had never seen or used it before. I understand the J-School is trying to ‘weed kids out’ to find the best journalists, but this is the first real journalism course where kids get to use the technology. If they’ve never had the opportunity to use it, then it is almost unfair that they do not get a proper demonstration on how it all works. Its almost as if you’re weeding them out without teaching them how to properly use the tools.
